This is what meaning I gathered from the video (plus how this song fits in the album). There are two meanings to this video. First is just from the handsome squidward, how he was acting in the video, and why everyone had masks. This was all because of the grammys. The people voting and putting songs up for grammys are often unknown and "faceless." Him acting the way he is and having that physically fake face is him acting and conforming to the way the grammys committee would want him to. Having to act that way makes him unhappy and is very fake, which explains the ending where he tries to kill himself. The second meaning to this, that fits with the overall story to his album, is having to put on this act, and fake face, after his breakup saying: "everything is okay, I am okay with how we ended things." Since that isn't true, he is fixated on his ex and doesn't even truly acknowledge anyone else at the party making them "faceless" to him. You hit it on the nose with the comment about the ex love interest liking his surface level, but being scared by his inner turmoil. His inner demons drove him to become distant and unfaithful, all the while "saying things he shouldn't say" like everything is fine, we're okay, this relationship will last; filling her with hope. Then, he runs away, breaking her heart, and reveals his inner demons. He does truly love her, but just can't stay due to his inner turmoil scaring him and leading him to be drawn to act upon his impulses (cheating). That's why at the party he hopes she comes up to him expressing how heart broken she is and saying how much she misses him. So he can get her back, while maintaining his façade of being okay with everything currently going on. He'll "take her back" not chase after her.

I LOST my shit when the girl at 3:21 comes in and started singing "My Heart" by Paramore. Maybe it's an older video, or she's just a fan, but that song is such a gem and it's so sweet to see a singer give it credit. Not to mention Paramore's performance of that song at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim on one of their first tours is one of the best live performances from the scene era.
